Read Between the Lines

Make a judgment about the site’s reliability based on your own analysis of the site and the information it contains. Here are some ways to do this:

·         Look for facts you know or can check with a trusted source. If the site gets those facts right, it’s more likely that the other facts on the site are also accurate.

·         Study the language used. Is it angry, sarcastic or overly impassioned? This may indicate that the site is biased.

·         Consider whether the arguments are logical and backed up by evidence, and whether the site presents only one point of view.

·         Check the links to the sources that the author acknowledges. Scholarly writing, whether in print or online, should include a bibliography.

Tip 5: Keep a List of Questions

When you feel confused about something you’re reading, write down any questions you have. Sometimes your questions are answered as you read further. If not, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Remember, teachers create assignments; they’ve read the texts and are familiar with them. When you have specific questions, your teachers can provide answers that will help you better understand the material. Learning is rooted in questions developed and asked by the learner.

Asking questions to yourself, to the teacher, and to others, is a great learning method. When you cease to ask questions, you cease to exist to a great extent. Read actively by silently asking questions as you read. Questioning immerses you into the material you are reading and therefore will expand your mental capacities more than almost anything else.

The philosopher Sir Francis Bacon said,” Knowledge is power.” Improving your reading comprehension is the key to gaining important knowledge and making the most of your education. So pick up a book… and a pen.

Do the Reading

You need to do more than just read the chapters you are assigned—you’re expected to understand them thoroughly. Here are some tips:

·         Don’t skim. Read all the material carefully.

·         Break up difficult assignments into sections you can digest—chapters, subsections or even paragraphs.

·         Look up any words that you don’t understand.

·         Pause to think about whether you understand the material; ask questions in class about anything that in unclear.

·         Take notes instead of highlighting—this makes you think through and rephrase the key points.

·         Create a summary sheet of what you learned from each assignment you read.

Online learning can be a powerful, stimulating, engaging experience for the student who can work and think independently. However, since most—if not all—of the learning takes place on your own time, you will not have the kind of direct supervision you would in a classroom. Online learning therefore requires a significant commitment from you. All education comes down to what you’re willing to invest in the experience—this is particularly true in the online environment. Commitment, self-discipline and self-motivation are all key qualities to ensuring success in an online course!

… Is comfortable and confident with written communication

Reading and writing are the basis of most online courses, so it’s critical that you feel comfortable with this form of communication. While some courses contain modules that include videos or other activities, all of them require significant amounts of reading. And nearly all of your communication with your classmate and your instructor will be in writing. If these are weak areas for you, you will want to address those issues prior to enrolling or while enrolled in an online course. The PSU Writing Center is available to assist you.
