Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.” Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and important, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction.”
-Margaret Thatcher
The most important thing to do in life to do the right thing because it will bring you the best satisfactions of one’s life. The best satisfaction to receive or to have is to have pride at what you do and what you have accomplished. If there was something you’ve wanted to accomplish but it was difficult and you accomplished it, then you should have a personal satisfaction and feel pride that you have accomplished it. For example, if you wanted to take a career as a doctor and it was difficult for you to manage the work but you still got it done, then it is a big accomplishment.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work Part 3

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 3
Brad MacGowan, of the Career Center at Newton North High School in Massachusetts, thinks that working can be a valuable part of a student’s life, if taken on responsibly. “You can derive a great deal from working, considerably more than just money,” he says. “In most cases, you can acquire a nice dose of discipline and a whole new set of skills and experiences. “In addition, your supervisor may be willing to write a strong college recommendation for you.
School Comes First
Schoolwork, including homework and studying for tests, should always be your top priority. MacGowan cautions students who do decide to work, “If you are rushing through your assignments…or not studying enough for tests because work, it’s time to cut back or quit and find a less time-consuming job.”

A girl locked up in the restroom

Summary:
This story was about some grandparents who locked up a little girl in the bathroom for 6 years. The only times that she was able to go out was when she had to go to school or when “Visitors came over the house on special occasions,” stated the grandfather, Brian G. Hart who was 50 years old.
Reflection:
This is a very disappointing and sad story to hear. It’s sad to hear that the girl, their own granddaughter, was locked up in the restroom and couldn’t go out; only on school days. It’s disappointing to hear that there is such disgusting people in the world who can do such a horrible thing, especially from your own family.

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work

Balancing High School and Part-Time Work
Part 1
Like many high school students, you may want—or need—to work part time. Working takes a lot of time and energy, though, so before getting a job, make sure that you think about your ability to handle both work and your education.
Important Considerations
You have to weigh a number of factors when deciding whether to take on a part-time job. It’s important to get as much information as possible, so you can figure out what choice the most sense for you.
Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to discuss the idea of working. Talk to your counselor about why you want to work and what type of position you’re seeking.

If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not the true, do not say it." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“If it is not right, do not do it; if it is not true, do no say it.”
-Marcus Aurelius
Roman Emperor from 161 AD to 180 AD
I agree with this statement because people should always choose the right and should never do the wrong thing. Like the quote states that we shouldn’t do something that we know isn’t the right thing to do. For example, if we know we have a lot of homework to do and we know that it’s better to stay home and work on it rather than go out with friends, then do it. You should go out knowing that you have a lot of work to do. Also when the quote states that we should say something that isn’t true. Saying the things that aren’t true will harm others, and that’s how rumor start. Talking about things that aren’t true and spreading it around is Gossip. Gossipers are not the best people, they are the one who choose the wrong and based on those rumors, people do get hurt. For example at school, some kids might talk bad about a new student who comes to school. They might say that that student thinks he is the best or a rumor which is not true, and people might not like him based on the rumors. They won’t give him the chance to get to know him.

"In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing.”
-Theodore Roosevelt
I agree with this statement because in life at any circumstance, the best thing to always do is to always choose the right, no matter what. Choosing the right will benefit you because you will have a happier, peaceful, and easier life. You won’t have to worry about whether or not you will get in trouble for doing something, which is why it is important to choose the right. An example would be if you are invited to a party on a weekend but you know you have too much work, you will need to make a decision about either going to the party or staying home and doing your work. The best decision to make should be to stay home and do your work.  If you slack off, you won’t finish your work, but if you focus and finish it on time, you will have more liberty to have free time.

The Arts
Research indicates that students who participate in the arts often do better in school and on standardized tests. The arts help you recognize patterns, discern differences and similarities, and exercise your mind in unique ways, often outside a traditional classroom setting.
Many colleges require or recommend one or two semesters in the arts. Good choices include studio art, dance, music and drama. Many students have talents and extraordinary abilities in the arts. Students should look within artistic abilities and take college classes to develop their talents.
Advanced Placement Program (AP)
To be sure you are ready to take on college level work, enroll in the most challenging courses you can in high school, such as honors or AP courses. Research consistently shows that students who score a 3.0 or higher on an AP Exam typically experience greater academic success and college graduation rates than students who don’t take AP.
Work hard in your righteous pursuits, and you will reap the benefits of self-fulfillment and job satisfaction. Don’t take shortcuts just to “get by,” instead, take challenging and difficult roads (courses) and reach higher mountain peaks of achievement.

"To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice" Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“To know what is right and not do it is the worst cowardice”
-Confucius
I agree with this statement because if someone knows what the right thing to do is at a certain moment and they don’t do it that means that they are cowards. For example if a teacher is absent and leaves work to do, one should follow directions and do the assignment. Others might not do it because the teacher isn’t there to be behind them and telling them what to do. The teacher won’t be there to make sure they are doing the assignment. But it is one’s responsibility to get the work done, whether the teacher is or is not there. If others are not doing the work, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do it either; you know you should do it, so you go on and do it. If you don’t do it, you are choosing the wrong. You must not be a follower. You must be a leader and choose the right.

Social Studies
You can better understand local and world events that are happening now by studying the culture and history that has shaped them. Here is a suggested course plan:
·         U.S. history (two semesters)
·         U.S. government (one semester)
·         World history or geography (one semester)
·         One additional semester in the above or other areas
Foreign Languages
Solid foreign language study shows colleges you’re willing to stretch beyond the basics. Many colleges require at least two years of study in the same foreign language, and some prefer more.
Learning a foreign language can be a challenge but is exciting. Repetition is the key to learning a language, and having conversations with others speaking the same language is the best way to learn this new language. Repetition in a fun way will build your skills thoroughly as you seek to master new languages.

"Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. These are the (3) magic keys to living your life with integrity." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Have the courage to say no. Have the courage to face the truth. Do the right thing because it is right. There are the (3) magic keys to living your life with integrity.”
-W. Clement Stone
What this quote means that we should have the courage to not accept anything bad that is being offered to us. We should have the courage to face reality and doing what is right. By doing these, it will help us have a better life. There is no need to fall into the wrong paths, if you know something is tempting, the correct thing to do is say NO and walk away from it. For example, if you are hanging with friends and you are asked a cigarette, you must know that you shouldn’t take it. If you feel pressured, you should stand up to them and say No and just walk away. If they keep bugging you about it, you should have the courage to just walk away and ignore them if they don’t listen to you the first time.

Science
Science teaches you to think analytically and apply theories to reality. Colleges want to see that you’ve taken at least three years of laboratory science classes. A good combination includes two semesters of each of the following sciences:
·         Biology
·         Chemistry or physics
·         Earth/Space science
More competitive schools expect you to take four years of lab science courses. You can add two semesters in one of the following subjects:
·         Chemistry or physics (the science you didn’t already study)
·         Advanced biology
·         Advanced chemistry
·         Advanced physics

Man returns stolen cash to Seattle, Washington Sears 60 years later

Summary:
This story was about a man who returned stolen money from a Seattle Washington Sears. The man had stolen money that was worth about $20-$30. 60 years later the man came to the store and gave an envelope to a worker. The envelope was to be given to the store manager. Inside the envelope, he gave $100.  Along with the money, the man wrote a note saying that the manager can add that money to the theft money.

Reflection:
I think that it was generous of the man to give back the money, even after 60 years. Many people would think that he would never return the money especially after such a long time. The main reason the man returned the money was because he felt guilty. He knew he had made a wrong decision in stealing the money, but 60 years later made “the right decision” to give it back. Consciousness will never leave you alone because you know you are guilty for committing a crime.

The following subjects and classes are standard fare for success in high school and beyond, whether you plan to attend a four-year or two-year college.
English (Language Arts)
Take English every year. Traditional courses, such as American and English literature, help you improve your writing skills, reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Math
You need algebra and geometry to succeed on college entrance exams and in college math classes—and in many careers. Take them early on. That way, you’ll be able to enroll in advanced science and math in high school, and show colleges you’re ready for higher-- level work.
Most colleges look for students who have taken three years of math in high school. The more competitive ones require or recommend four years. Each school has its own program, but some of the courses typically offered are:
·         Algebra I
·         Algebra II
·         Geometry
·         Trigonometry
·         Calculus

‘Tis the Set of the Sail
-Ella Wheeler Wilcox 1916
But to every mind there openeth,
A way, and a way, and away.
A high soul climbs the highway,
And the low soul gropes the low,
And in between on the misty flats,
The rest drift to and fro.

But to every man there openeth,
A high way and a low,
And every mind decideth,
The way his soul shall go.

One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.
Like the winds of the sea
Are the waves of time,
As we journey along through life,
‘Tis the set of the soul,
That determines the goal,
And not the clam or the strife.

Recommended Classes for College Success
Part 1
The academic rigor of your high school courses is an important factor in the college admission process. College admission officers see your high school course schedule as a blueprint of your education. They’re looking for a solid formation of learning that you can build on in college.
To create that foundation, take at least five solid academic classes every semester. Start with the basics and then move on to advanced courses. Challenging yourself is part of what makes school fun; but you need a firm grasp of the fundamentals before going on to more advanced work.

:A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“A man without a goal is like a ship without a rudder.”
-Thomas Carlyle
This statement means that that if you don’t have something that pushes and helps you to go somewhere, then you won’t go anywhere. Having a goal is as important as a ship having a rudder. When having a goal, you know what the things you are required to do in order to get there. The ships needs a rudder in order to move and go where it needs to go. An example would be if you want to become a doctor, you need to know all the things that are required for you to do in order to get there.

Getting the Most Out of a Session
Here are some tips to help your group get the most out of each study session:
·         Decide what you’re going to do in advance.
·         Prepare for the session, so you can make the most of your time together.
·         Take turns teaching, to reinforce your own knowledge.
·         Stick to the session topic.

By supplementing your individual study with a study group, you can reinforce what you’ve learned, deepen your understandings of complex concepts, and maybe even make a few new friends. Remember that a friend is a person who encourages you to do your best and to achieve on a high level, one who pushes you to try a little harder and be a little better. If someone pulls you down the wrong trails of life, then those people are not friends, (they are actually your enemy), and you must avoid them at all cost. Whoever said learning can’t be fun? Learning is enjoyable and exciting when you study with others.

The Power of Study Groups
Part 3
Guidelines for Getting a Group Together
Here are some guidelines for creating and running a study group; how many? Create a group of four to six people. In a larger group, it’s easy for someone to get left out and smaller groups can too easily get off track.
Who? Pick classmates who seem to share your interests in doing well academically. Look for people who stay alert in class, take notes, ask questions and respond to the teacher’s questions. Include someone who understands the material better than you can explain the concepts and someone who doesn’t understand it as well, to whom you can explain the material.
Where? Hold study group sessions in a place that is free of distractions and that has room to spread out books and notes.
How long? Meet for no more than two to three hours at a time. Having a time limit helps the group focus. If you know you only have an hour, you’re more likely to stay on task.
When? Try to meet regularly, on the same day and time each week. Treating the study session as you would other activities helps you to keep a schedule and ensure that everyone attends.

Part 2
The Benefits of Study Groups
Group study offers other advantages in addition to gaining a deeper understanding of class material. These include the opportunity to; Reinforce note-taking. If your AP Biology notes are unclear, you can ask a  member of your study group to help you fill the gaps. Share talents. Each person brings different strengths, such as organizational skills, the ability to stick to a task or a capacity for memorization.
Cover more ground. Group members may be able to solve a calculus problem together that none would have solved alone.
Benefit from a support system. Members often have common goals, such as good grades. Each person’s work affects the other members, which results in making members supportive of one another. Socialize. It’s more fun to study with others; the give-and-take makes it more interesting. And because it’s more fun, you spend more time studying!

Goals
“In life as in football, you won’t go far, unless you know where the goalposts are.”
-Arnold Glasgow
I agree with this statement because you won’t have any sense of direction unless you have a goal you want to accomplish. If you don’t have a goal that needs to be accomplished then you won’t have something to work on to get there. For example if you want to become a doctor, you need to get classes that will prepare you for that career. You will also need extra help from professionals. You can go to a hospital and volunteer so you can gain some experience.

Working Together Helps Everyone
You may have noticed that when you’re explaining something you’ve learned to a friend, you begin to understand it better yourself. This happens because, when you explain an idea, you need to think more deeply about it.
The same principle makes study groups useful. Studying with others in a small group is helpful because you:
·         Think out loud.
·         Share ideas.
·         Learn from one another.
In an effective study group, you and other students hash put lesson materials together—explaining concepts, arguing about them, figuring out why one person’s answer differs from another’s—and in the process you most likely learn more than you would have studying by yourself.
