"Success is dependent on effort." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Success is dependent on effort.”
-Sophocles, Greek dramatist
I agree with this statement because when someone wants to be successful, their success will depend on how much effort they put in to get far. If you truly want to become someone important in life, then the biggest step to do is putting effort on your work. When putting effort, you will be rewarded with a better future. You will also be rewarded with a happier and peaceful life.

How to Take on College Studying Part 2

How to Take on College Studying
Part 2
Choose Where to Study
Where you should study depends on two factors: the environment in which you are best able to concentrate and the type of work you are planning to do.
·         The best places to study have good light, a comfortable temperature and enough desk space—usually your dorm room, your apartment or the library
·         For completing problem sets or brainstorming possible test questions, you may want to study with a group or at least in a setting where fellow students are available for discussion.
·         When you are reading book chapters or working on a research paper you are probably better off in a less social environment.
Improve Your Study Habits
Here are simple steps you can take to help you get a handle on studying:
·         Have a routine for where and when you study.
·         Choose reasonable and specific goals that you can accomplish for each study session.
·         Do things that are harder or require more intense thought at your most productive time of the day.
·         Take breaks if you need them so you don’t waste time looking at material but not absorbing it.
·         Get to know students whom you respect and can study with or contact to ask questions
·         Keep up with the workload and seek help when you need it.

Jenna Huff Sportsmanhsip

Summary:
This story was about a high school girl showing sportsmanship during an Olympic committee. Deb was one of the fastest racers. She had prepared herself a lot for the moment of the final race. She was ready to start her biggest and important race. When she was almost at the finish line, she got a pain; she couldn’t continue on. Another racer, Jenna, who wanted to catch up to Deb in the race, finally caught up to her when Deb stood there in pain. The biggest and important show of sportsmanship was when Jenna instead of finishing the race, helped Deb finish the race. Jenna pushed Deb to keep on going so she can win. Jenna didn’t care about winning, she “Would rather be disqualified doing something good than doing something bad.”
Reflection:
I think that this story was very interesting. When Jenna helped out Deb, she demonstrated what Good Sportsmanship is. I think it was very nice of her helping out Deb finish the race when Deb was in pain. The important thing is that she helped her out without wanting any reward back. She didn’t care of being disqualified; all she cared was for Deb being able to finish the race as she would if she had not had that pain. This comes to show that there are people in the world who do really amazing things to help others.

Develop Good Study Habits
In college, you’ll need to build on the study skills that you learned in high school. The demands of a college class are probably more rigorous than those you are used to.
You can succeed by knowing what to expect and how to handle it. Think of a college as a full-time job, in which you spend 40 hours a week on class, labs, study groups and doing homework.
Being organized and using your time well are essential. Learn more about time management, and use the guidelines below to develop your study skills.
Decide When to Study
Work out about how many hours you need to study every day. Then make a schedule.
·         Figure out what blocks of time you have available throughout the day, in the evenings and on weekends.
·         Consider what time of day you are most alert—there are morning people and night owls—and try to schedule your study accordingly.
·         Think about whether you do better studying for a few hours at a time or sitting down for marathon sessions.

"Choosing the right is always the right thing to do." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Choosing the right is always the right thing to do.”
-Alex Linares
The best thing to do in life is to always choose the right. When choosing the right, you will be making the correct decisions. The outcome of your decisions will determine the consequences later on in the future. It is very important to do the right thing because it will bring you a happy and positive life. An example would be making the correct decision to study for the next day's test. For example, if you will be having a test the nest day, you have to study. But then your friends tell you to go out and play with them, what will you decide to do? The best decision to make is to stay home and study. The best reward is that you will get a good score on your test.

10 Time Management Tips for Students Tips 5-10

10 Time Management Tips for Students
Tips 5-10
Tip 5. Review Your Notes Every Day.
Reviewing helps you reinforce what you’ve learned, so you need less time to study before a test. You’ll also be ready if you get called on in class or have to take a pop quiz.
Tip 6. Get a Good Night’s Sleep.
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. Lack of sleep makes all day seem longer and your tasks seem more difficult.
Tip 7. Communicate Your Schedule to Others.
If phone calls or text messages are proving to be a distraction, tell your friends that you are only available at certain times of day and not to expect a response at other times.
Tip 8. Become a Taskmaster.
Give yourself a time budget and plan your activities accordingly. Figure out how much free time you have each week before you add any commitments.
Tip 9. Don’t Waste Time Agonizing.
Instead of agonizing and procrastinating, just do it. Wasting an entire evening worrying about something that you’re supposed to be doing is not productive, and can increase your stress.
Tip 10. Determine Your Priorities.
You can’t do everything at once. Establish the importance of each item. Then set realistic goals that are attainable.

"It's better to be alone than to be in bad company" Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“It’s better to be alone than to be in bad company.”
-Anon
This statement means that we should never be around people who chose the wrong. It’s better off to be alone than to hang around with people who chose the wrong. If you hang around with those people, you might get influenced. They might pressure you to do something that you don’t want, but if everyone from that group of people keep telling you to do it, you might give up on yourself and do it. Then you might keep on doing it and you will become like one of them. For example, they can tell you to join them and do drugs. You might not want to because you know its the correct thing to do. But if they pressure you, you might end up doing it. You might become a drug addict. The best way is to say NO and walk away from them if they pressure you to do something you know is bad; you shouldn’t even be with them in the first place. Better to be alone than to be around people who CTW.

10 Time Management Tips for Students

10 Time Management Tips for Students
Tips 1-4
Organizing Your Life
Managing your time well is an important element of success—especially if you’re a student. If you set priorities that fit your needs and lifestyle, you’ll have a better chance of achieving your goals. Here are some tips for taking control of your time and organizing your life.
Tip 1. Make a To-Do List Every Day.
Put things that are most important at the top and do them first. And don’t forget to reward yourself for your accomplishments.
Tip 2. Use Spare Minutes Wisely.
When you’re commuting on the bus or train, use the time to get some reading done.
Tip 3. It’s Okay to Say No.
If your friend asks you to go to a movie on a Thursday night and you have an exam the next morning, realize that it’s okay to say no. Keep your short- and long- term priorities in mind.
Tip 4. Find the Right Time.
You’ll work more efficiently if you figure out when you do your best work. For example, if your brain handles math better in the afternoon, don’t wait to do it until late at night.

"Improvement begins with I."

Student Success Statement
Improvement begins with I.”
-ANON
This statement means that anything that you want to accomplish or improve, you’re the first person to take a step and go for the prize. If you don’t push yourself to make a change then you will be stuck in the same place; you won’t go far. But if you really want to become better at anything you desire, then you should do everything to be successful. An example would be wanting to become a better basketball player. If you need improvement on any skill, and you want to be better at it, then it depends on you if you want to improve or not. No one else will do it for you; you are the one in charge of your dream goals. To become a better and improved person, it starts with “‘I’ want to Improve.”

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
3) Heart: Always do what is right so your heart, your conscience, will feel peaceful. When you do wrong, your conscience will prick you and create regretful sensations within your heart. When you do what you honestly feel, you won’t have any regrets. Your heart is your internal compass—it gives you direction and discernment. Just like a magnetic compass gives directions, even true north, your personal compass, your heart, will point you in the true north, the exact directions and paths you need to trod.

4) Soul: study scriptures and other sacred literature daily. In other words, feed your spirit because your spirit needs spiritual food just like your physical body needs temporal food to survive. Pondering, meditating, and reflecting are excellent Soul-sharpening activities. Try writing your thoughts, feelings, aspirations, concerns, and decisions in a diary or journal. Writing helps you focus and make good decisions.
Get into the habit of daily improving your body (physical fitness), your mind, your heart, and your soul.

Sarah from Central Washington Softball Team

Summary: This story was about a softball player named Sarah. She had never hit a homerun in her entire career. Her biggest goal was to be able to make a homerun, and at some point her dream came true. In her final game in the second inning, she hit a homerun. But by the time that she got to first base, she dropped to the ground because she was having a pain in the knee. Good sportsmanship was shown when two girls from the other team, Mallory and Liz, carried her to each base so Sarah can finish her homerun.
Reflection: To me, this was a very interesting and appealing story. I was happy to know that Sarah accomplished her dream, something that she had been wishing and waiting for in her entire career.  Finishing that run was the most exciting and happiest moment of her life. Although she couldn’t make it to the final bases on her own, the two girls from the other team helped her out. This was very nice and sportsmanship-like. It comes to show that there are people in the world who don’t care much about winning or losing, but by being able to help others, especially when it’s something you have been dreaming of.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Teens should never get too busy living to take time to renew themselves. When teens “sharpen the saw” they are keeping their personal self-sharp so that they can better deal with life. It means regularly renewing and strengthening the four key dimensions of life-body, mind, heart, and soul.
1)   Body. Eat wholesome foods, fruits, vegetables, legumes. Avoid illegal drugs, smoking alcohol, tobacco products, tattooing. Exercise regularly and effectively. Get plenty of rest at night. Get to bed early at night and get up early each morning. “Early to bed early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”
2)   Mind. Think positively. Read. Study. Think. Analyze. Seek to read a good book each month. Then each week. Ask intelligent questions. Observe. Develop your mind through positive “self-talk.”

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.”
-Helen Keller
I completely agree with this statement. When people work alone, they can’t really accomplish many things. But when people work together, they can accomplish many things. Those people that work together are more than likely to be more successful and have a better future ahead of them. When working together, not only can you accomplish more things but you can also do things a lot better. You will have better ideas and strategies to do certain things. It is important having a variety of these ideas because it would be easier to have many solutions for a problem.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 6

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 6
Habit 6: Synergize
Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create something better than either could alone. Through this habit, teens learn it doesn’t have to be “your way” or “my way” but rather a better way, a higher way. Synergy is the reward, the delicious fruit you’ll taste as you get better at living the other habits, especially at thinking Win-Win and seeking first to understand. Learning to synergize is like learning to form V formations with others instead of trying to fly through life solo. You’ll be amazed at how much faster and farther you’ll go. Synergy doesn’t just happen. It’s a process. You have to get there. And the foundation of getting there is this: Learn to celebrate differences.
A good band is a great example of synergy. It’s not just the drums, or the guitar, or he sax, or the vocalist, it’s all of them together that make up the “sound.” Each band member brings his or her strengths to the table to create something better than each could alone No instrument is more important than another, just different.

"So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the "in-group," we lose sight of things that are far more important." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“So often, in our quest to be more popular and to be part of the “in-group,” we lose sight of things that are far more important.”
-Sean Covey
In life, there will always be a set of people who have their own groups, or cliques. Most have these groups in order to be identified and maybe even respected. Then we have another set of people who don’t have a group and don’t mind. But then there’s some that don’t have a group and want to be in one because they think that if they are, then they will be more popular. So in order for them to go in, they stop being who they truly are and become more like the people in the group. By doing so, they might get the attention from that group and ask them to be part of them. But the problem is that there are some people that might ask you to do the wrong choices in order to be part of their group. For example, those who want to be part of a gang, most likely they are asked to do something illegally like robbing, breaking in to a house, or maybe even killing. These “new comers” choose the wrong and will have to live with the negative consequences later on in life. They don’t know that they are losing the most important thing about them, which is their own uniqueness.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 5

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 5
5. Seek First to Understand, and then to be Understood
Because most people don’t listen very well, one of the great frustrations in life is that many don’t feel understood. This habit will ensure your teen learns the most important communication skill there is: active listening.
Why is this habit the key to communication? It’s because the deepest need of the human heart is to be understood. Everyone wants to be respected and valued for who they are—a unique, one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-cloned individuals. People won’t expose their soft middles un less they feel genuine love and understanding. Once they feel it, however, they will tell you more than you may want to hear. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.
Listen with your eyes, heart, and ears. 7 percent of communication is contained in the words we use. The rest comes from body language (53 percent) and how we say words, or the tone and feeling reflected in our voice (40 percent).
Most people are eager to talk and had rather talk than listen. We have one mouth and two ears. This means we should listen twice as much as we talk. We actually learn more while listening rather than when we talk. Learn to listen and listen to learn.
Listen, really listen, for understanding.
Seek first to understand then to be understood---LISTEN

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Habit 4

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
Habit 4
4. Think Win-Win
Teens can learn to foster the belief that it is possible to create an atmosphere of Win-Win in every relationship. This habit encourages the idea that in any given discussion or situation both parties can arrive at a mutually beneficial solution. Your teen will learn to celebrate the accomplishments of others instead of being threatened by them. Win-Win is a belief that everyone can win. It’s both nice and tough all at once. I won’t step on you, but I won’t be your doormat either. You care about other people and you want them to succeed. But you also care about yourself, and you want to succeed as well. Win-Win is abundant. It is the belief that there’s plenty of success to go around. It’s not either you or me. It’s both of us. It’s not a matter of who gets the biggest piece of the pie. There’s more than enough food for everyone. It’s an all-you-can-eat benefit.
Win-win always creates more. Perhaps the most surprising benefit of thinking Win-Win is the good feelings it brings on. The true test of whether or not you are thinking Win-Win or one of the alternatives is how you feel. Win-Lose and Lose-Win thinking will cloud your judgment and fill you with negative feelings.
Win-Win will fit your heart with happy and serene thoughts. It will give you confidence. Even fill you with light. Think Win-Win or no deal.

"You cannot do wrong and feel right. it is impossible." Student Success Statement

Student Success Statement
“You cannot do wrong and feel right. It is impossible.”
-Ezra T. Benson
It is impossible to do something wrong and feeling good about it. Doing the wrong will bring negative consequences and you might be living a miserable life.  If you feel good about something that you did wrong, then there is something that is obviously wrong with you. Doing something wrong will cause you to be aware of your conscience and it should make you think about the things you had done.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens Habit 3

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 3
Habit 3: Put First Things First
Habit three is about Will and Will Not power. This habit helps teens prioritize and manage their time so that they focus on and complete the most important things in their lives. Putting first things first also means learning to overcome fears and being strong during difficult times. It’s living life according to what matters most. Putting first things first deals with things that re:
Important or not important, urgent or not urgent. Let’s look at the four quadrants of time management.
Quadrant 1: Things that are Important and Urgent
Quadrant 2: Things that are Important but not Urgent
Quadrant 3: things that are Not Important and Urgent
Quadrant 4: Things that are not Important and Not Urgent
1.     Important & Urgent
2.     Important but not Urgent
3.     Not Important but are Urgent
4.     Not Important and Not Urgent

Quadrant 2 is the ideal place to spend our time, doing things that are important but not urgent. Here’s where priorities come into play. The results for living Quadrant 2 are:
1.   Control of your life
2.   Balance
3.   High Performance

So, in what quadrant are you spending most of your time? The key is to shift as much time as possible into Quadrant 2 and this is accomplished by planning. Spend more time planning and incorporating the most important things first, things that matter most. Keep your eyes on the prize and reach for it.

“The only difference between those who have failed and those who have succeeded lies in the difference of their habits. Good habits are the key to all success. Bad habits are the unlocked door to failure. Thus, the first law I will obey, which precedeth all others is—‘I will form good habits and become their slaves.’ “
-Og Mandino
This statement means that there is a difference between failure and success. Being successful means being able so surpass challenges that you are confronted with in life. Being successful means adopting good habits. Failing means that you don’t try to overcome the obstacles that are put out. Failing means that you adopt the bad habits. An example of being successful is practicing something that you are not really good at, practicing becomes a habit and you get better at it. An example of failing is not practicing the things that you need to work on.

7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens
Habit 2
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind
If teens aren’t clear about where they want to end up in life, about their values, goals, and what they stand for, they will wander, waste time, and be tossed to and fro by the opinions of others. Help your teen create a personal mission statement which will act as a road map and direct and guide his decision-making process.
“Keep your eyes on the prize.” Determine your desired prize and don’t quit until you have realized the achievement of your prize. Then set another prize, another goal or desire that you would really like to achieve. Begin with the achievement of your prize in mind. Visualize and then realize. Start by having a target in mind; know where you are going.
One prize or goal you definitely need to establish for yourself is the prize of an honorable graduation from high school-that you will receive your diploma honestly and with integrity-- that you earned it with perfect honesty.
